FRANCIS AND HALSALL TEAM VOW TO FIGHT ON AFTER BAD LUCK STRIKES AT THRUXTON

The Movuno.com Halsall Racing team and rider Joe Francis plan to put a tough weekend behind them and look ahead to the remainder of the Dickies British Supersport Championship instead.

After a hard weekend as the series headed to Thruxton, team owner Martin Halsall, Francis and the rest of the crew plan to move on and build on the strong pace Francis demonstrated on the team’s Yamaha R6 throughout the seventh round of the season.

Francis had looked on course for at least two podiums if not two wins, but bad luck once again struck and he ended up with one ninth place and a DNF after crashing out of Sunday’s Feature race.

Saturday’s Sprint race turned out to be a race of two parts for the Chester teenager. After taking the lead at the start, he had already built a strong gap at the front when the race was stopped on the third lap after a track contamination.

At the restart he got away in second place, but it wasn’t to last. In what was to become a hard-fought scrap, Francis and the top five runners spent most of the 10 lap battle swapping places and dicing for position.

After much slip-streaming and elbows out action, he was second behind the Appleyard Macadam bike of series leader Keith Farmer as the pack began the final lap.

But a mistake in the final chicane was to prove costly for the 19-year-old as he had a bump with Andrew Irwin and both ran onto the grass. He rejoined to cross the line 10th overall and ninth in class.

For Sunday’s Feature race, he started from eighth on the grid, but after a stunning first lap was fourth as he began lap two. He moved up to third on the fourth lap, before taking second a lap later.

On the sixth lap, Alastair Seeley passed him on the non-point scoring Spirit machine, dropping him to third, and with the leader very much in sight, Francis needed to get back past the Moto 2 machine to try and go for the race win. But he made a little mistake as he tried to make the move, and his race came to an early end on lap seven as he crashed out.

“I’m gutted because I honestly believed we could’ve had two potential wins here,” he said. “We worked hard during practice and had our strategy mapped out, so when I got to the front in the first race I used my tyres perfectly to get a decent lead. The red flag definitely cost me the win, I have no doubt about that.

“After the restart I pushed hard but we had a massive tank-slapper and then that contact with Irwin which put me back to 10th, so it was a bit of a disaster and I’d hoped for better on Sunday.

“At the start I was a lot faster than everyone else and once I was up to second I felt really comfortable. But as I was about to make a move back on Seeley, I felt the back wheel come up. I thought I was going to run off and maybe lose a couple of places, but next thing I knew I was on the floor.

“I really think I could’ve won that one too, and I’ve just got to take the positives and move on. I want to thank the team for giving me a mega bike this weekend, and I’m just sorry we couldn’t get that first win.”

Team owner Martin Halsall echoed his rider’s comments. “I’m devastated for Joe and the team, everyone has worked so hard going into this round and they really deserved at least one win there.

“It’s very clear to see the improvements in the bike over the recent rounds, it’s been up there running at the front and that’s testament to the hard work of everyone. We know the bike is capable and Joe has proved he is capable too, and now we just need this run of bad luck to end.

“We have the full package and we are just going to put this all behind us and come back at Cadwell Park in a fortnight and do our best to get that first win of the year.”
